  • Publication: The George Washington University
  • Release Date: March 22, 2013
Washington, D.C. –  The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) announces today that beginning Fall 2013, it is launching a new Executive Master of Health Services Administration (EMHSA) degree.   The EMHSA, offered through the Department of Health Services Management and Leadership (HSML) is taught in a hybrid model combining four-day in-person intensive classes on the Washington, D.C. Foggy Bottom campus followed by twelve-week online integrated learning modules.

New and sophisticated leadership skills are necessary to create highly effective healthcare organizations.  Designed to meet the educational and career needs of today’s busy healthcare professional, the EMHSA curriculum concentrates on leadership and ethics.  The EMHSA provides six core content areas required by healthcare leaders; management and strategy, finance and economics, quality improvement, information technology and decision science, community health and quantitative methods, and law and regulation.

Professor and Director, MHSA Degree Programs, Leonard H. Friedman, PhD, MPH, FACHE believes the program couldn’t come at a better time.  “With the adoption and implementation of the historic Affordable Care Act, today’s mid-career healthcare managers must meet the demands of an increasingly intricate and ever-changing healthcare delivery environment.  By providing learners the opportunity to obtain the EMHSA degree online, we are helping them meet their job requirements and fulfill their educational and professional goals.”

Graduates of the EMHSA program will be able to:

  • Effectively advance organizational change and promote organizational and clinical excellence
  • Lead health services organizations under alternative financing mechanisms
  • Manage human resources in diverse organizational environments
  • Utilize information resources to assist in effective decision making and clinical management
  • Use statistical, quantitative, and economic analyses in decision making
  • Improve both business and clinical outcomes of health services organizations
  • Apply ethical decision making practices in their daily routines

The EMHSA can be completed in two years.  Courses are taught by full-time GW faculty and include highly qualified and experienced practitioners.  All students will be required to complete an applied research project that will be presented during their final semester.  Application deadline is June 15, 2013.  For more information or to find out how to apply contact Leonard H.
