Thomas Dahlborg, MSHSM

With more than 30 years of extensive leadership experience and focus on patient and engagement, research, quality improvement and innovation, Tom has a long history of positioning healthcare systems to achieve their goals. He is passionate about hardwiring service excellence and ensuring all who engage with healthcare systems are treated with respect, compassion and kindness. He recently chaired the World Congress Patient Engagement Summit. Tom also delivered opening remarks and facilitated the patient and family advisor panel at the National Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC) Conference. He is frequently sought out as an advisor for the creation of Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs), working to improve patient engagement and compassionate care as a speaker, writer and reviewer.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining Studer Group, Tom was the CFO and vice president of strategy for the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ). In this position, he was responsible for the financial health of the organization and providing focus and systems to improve child health. Following his passion, he led the parent partnership program, increasing parental engagement in pediatric quality improvement. Prior to NICHQ, Tom was the executive director for the Hygeia Foundation, a non-profit research institute and innovation laboratory. While there, he advanced primary care and behavioral health integration, chronic disease management innovation, patient and family engagement, patient activation, patient experience optimization and innovated care access.

Signature Engagements

  • Increased organization’s reserves by 19 percent and cash position by 80 percent, all while leading parent partnership program
  • Increased patient visits by 31.5 percent and practitioner revenue by 52.6 percent while also increasing access for the uninsured and underinsured by over 17 percent
  • Decreased administrative costs to 6 percent of gross-revenue and the medical cost ratio to less than 75 percent while achieving a member/patient satisfaction rate of 98 percent and employee satisfaction rate of 95 percent
  • Saved an academic integrated delivery system $30 million through managed care strategy and reimbursement planning
