Jack Barto, MHA, FACHE

In 13 years at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Jack Barto turned a public hospital in southeastern North Carolina into a national leader in quality and patient experience, all while the hospital enjoyed its greatest decade of growth, financial strength and workforce stability. The journey began as a partnership with the Studer Group, but evolved even further as a culture of excellence jointly owned by staff, physicians and board leadership. Jack drove the message that by adhering to baseline standards, such as developing leaders to coach rather than manage, staff become owners instead of renters who buy into your mission and pursue purposeful, worthwhile work that makes a difference. Jack was inducted into the Studer Group Firestarter Hall of Fame in 2013.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining Studer Group as a national speaker, Jack was the President and CEO for New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C. In this position, he was responsible for a six-hospital, 800-bed public teaching health system serving seven counties, with more than $1 billion in revenue, 6,800 employees and 560 physicians. Prior to NHRMC, Jack served as President and CEO at Provena Mercy Center in Aurora, Illinois, a seven-hospital system; regional vice president of Memorial Sisters of Charity Health Network in Houston, Texas; and CEO of Sisters of Charity Health Systems in Houston.
