About Us

West Kendall Baptist Hospital is part of the Baptist Health South Florida family, the largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare organization in the South Florida region. Baptist Health's network encompasses six hospitals and numerous outpatient diagnostic and urgent care facilities.

Opened in late April 2011, West Kendall is a long-anticipated addition to the Miami suburb of Kendall, one of South Florida's fastest-growing communities. The 133-bed hospital campus is Miami's first completely new, non-replacement hospital built since the mid-1970s. With a staff of 500 physicians and approximately 1,000 employees, the hospital already has grown to become a vital contributor to the Kendall community and economy.

West Kendall Baptist Hospital is Baptist Health's first dedicated academic medical campus, through an affiliation with Florida International University's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. It is also the vanguard in Baptist Health's emerging patient- and family-centered care medical approach, which encourages families' participation during the healing process.

The hospital campus was developed with a commitment to the environment and recently earned LEED Gold certification for sustainable design from the U.S. Green Building Council. We have implemented strategies for water and energy use as well as emissions and waste reduction.

Our commitment to creating a serene and healing environment resulted in the hospital's selection as one of America's Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals for 2012, placing first in Florida and fourth nationwide.

West Kendall was conceived and built within the Baptist Health culture of excellence. Best practices were embedded in the new hospital's leadership team and have become a part of everyday operations.

Our team thinks, works and evaluates its performance according to the six Studer pillars of excellence: People, Service, Quality, Growth, Finance and Community.

People

At West Kendall Baptist Hospital, we know that a hospital is only as good as its people — and we have worked diligently to attract and retain a world-class team of physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers dedicated to providing only the best healthcare for our community. And the results are in:

  • Gallup poll 2011 — placed in the top quartile nationwide in employee satisfaction, with team members registering an engagement index of 12:1

One of the most important questions in the survey, in our opinion, was also our highest scoring: "The mission or purpose of my organization makes me feel my job is important."

  • HealthStream physician satisfaction survey — ranked in the 96th percentile overall; 93rd percentile for the level of physicians' satisfaction with our nursing care; 88th percentile for physicians who said they would recommend West Kendall Baptist Hospital to family and friends
  • Volunteer satisfaction — registered at an astonishing 99th percentile

Service

West Kendall Baptist Hospital was built on the foundation of patient- and family-centered care — and nothing embodies that spirit more than our dedication to compassionate service and quality. Our goal is to provide not just a positive patient outcome, but to provide the perceptible standard of excellence that is unique to Baptist Health.

By paying close attention to details like courtesy, wait times, personal follow-up, as well as engaging the family in the delivery of care, we've had a substantial impact on our patient's perception of care:

  • Press Ganey — 99th percentile for inpatient; 95th percentile for outpatient; 99th percentile for emergency department; 99th percentile for outpatient surgery
  • HCAHPS (preliminary results) — greater than 95th percentile on six out of 10 measures

Quality

When West Kendall opened its doors in April 2011, we did so with the goal of ranking among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationally in several key quality measures:

  • National Quality Measures — 90 percent in the top 10 percent

We're proud to report that the results of our October 2011 NDNQI R.N. survey were equally outstanding. The assessment shows high levels of satisfaction among our nurses in the professional practice environment as well as job enjoyment. Along with at or above benchmark Nursing Quality Indicators, we are now well positioned to achieve the prestigious Magnet certification.

Growth and Finance

Since our April 2011 opening, our efficiency metrics are better than budgeted, with cost-per-patient day lower than expected, as well as staff-per-adjusted admission.

Our Emergency Department is now treating an average of 120 patients a day, far exceeding projections. Our Beautiful Beginnings Family Birthing Suites have welcomed close to 600 new babies to the world to date.

As we celebrated our first anniversary, we opened the Baptist Health Medical Group Family Medicine Center at West Kendall Baptist Hospital on the first floor of our adjacent Medical Arts Building. This new center will be the principal training ground for our highly anticipated Family Medicine Residency program.

Community

Baptist Health has a longstanding tradition of community involvement, and West Kendall is proud to keep that tradition alive. In 2011, we introduced several community health fairs and programs, as well as key fundraising efforts. We are proud to say West Kendall Baptist Hospital employees raised over $85,000 for the United Way alone.

One initiative we are especially proud of is our affiliation with Zoo Miami. Among the many facets of this partnership is the creation of specially designed walking programs and a high-profile vita course on zoo property, which will bear our name. We also have partnered with the Miami-Dade County Parks Department to develop plans for creating a vita course on our campus.

Poised for Future Growth and Success

In only a short year and a half, West Kendall Baptist Hospital has made significant strides toward fulfilling our goal of bringing the best patient- and family-centered care to South Florida — a goal we will continue to pursue vigorously in the months and years ahead.

Our team is grateful to the Studer Group for this recognition and appreciates the group's contributions in helping us achieve peak performance.
