Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) has served Upstate South Carolina since 1921 and has grown to four hospitals, 7,500 associates and 90 physician practices.

Of the four hospitals:

  • Spartanburg Medical Center is a 540-bed research and teaching hospital
  • Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care is a 97-bed long-term, acute-care hospital with a 25-bed skilled nursing facility
  • Pelham Medical Center is a 48-bed acute care facility
  • Union Medical Center is a 143-bed hospital

The healthcare system also includes Gibb Cancer Center & Research Institute, with four locations across Upstate South Carolina; the physician group Medical Group of the Carolinas; and hospice services.

Driven by a vision to become a national leader in healthcare quality, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System embarked on its Journey to Excellence in 2013. SRHS’s partnership with Studer Group was timely and a natural fit for the committed leadership team. The system’s first Studer Group account leader was instrumental in helping implement best practices designed to drive accountability and elevate the patient experience. Many initiatives that were new to associates at that time are now hardwired behaviors and practices.

The Evidence-Based LeadershipSM model is now ingrained, and as a result, SRHS has had four years of award-winning associate engagement. The healthcare system now approaches a milestone of Leadership Development Institute number 20 and the linkage grids remain relevant.

Rounding, which connects leaders with associates, other leaders, patients and their families, is one of the most meaningful tactics introduced and implemented. Strongly tied to rounding is recognition, as leaders routinely garner compliments from associates, peers, patients and other guests.

SRHS also has a robust reward & recognition system which was implemented early on as an integral part of the system’s Journey to Excellence. Recognition includes honoring Associates of the Quarter and giving DAISY nursing awards. Additionally, associates can submit improvement ideas and receive compensation if the idea is adopted.

Elevate Experience is one of SRHS’s pillars and sits at the heart of the Journey to Excellence. In the world of “top box” where a 1 percent movement is good, SRHS has achieved exceptional results since 2013 in many HCAHPS domains. To date, SRHS’s greatest HCAHPS achievement has been with improvements directly linked to Hourly Rounding® and Bedside Shift Report® — a 15 to 20 percent increase in top box.

SRHS also realized improvement in nurse/physician domains, most notably Nurse Communication by almost 5 percent top box and Physician Communication by around 7 percent. Patients feel the difference, which is reflected in a 10 percent top box improvement in our Overall Rating of Hospital for Spartanburg Medical Center and Pelham Medical Center combined. Great care frequently starts in the emergency centers, which have also seen many improvements. The Overall Rating of Care top box score at Spartanburg Medical Center’s Level I Trauma Center (> 90K visits annually) has improved over 9 percent.

Union Medical Center joined the system in 2015 and was quickly brought on board with the Journey to Excellence. In this short time, we celebrated a 17 percent top box improvement in Union Medical Center’s Overall Rating of Care for the emergency center.

SRHS’s outpatient service line has experienced much growth while continuing to demonstrate improvements in patient experience.

The healthcare system has also received multiple accolades as a result of the Journey to Excellence, including Pelham Medical Center’s being named one of Modern Healthcare's Best Places to Work for three straight years in a row. Spartanburg Regional was named 2018 Workplace of the Year by the Advisory Board.
