Sidney Health Center is an independent, not-for-profit, community based medical center that has been serving rural Eastern Montana for more than 100 years. Located in the heart of Richland County, the Sidney Health Center campus includes a 25-bed critical access care hospital, clinic area, retail pharmacy and a 93-bed extended care facility offering a complete range of services from birth through end-of-life, which is complemented by an array of outreach services such as comprehensive cancer care, a wide array of surgical services, and cutting edge imaging services.
 
This continuum of services is not typical of rural healthcare organizations, but Sidney Health Center is not typical. A strong complement of primary care physicians and a unique selection of surgical specialists combined with a modern facility and up-to-date medical equipment makes Sidney Health Center a special place to work, receive care, and practice medicine.
 
With a commitment to its community, Sidney Health Center made the decision to partner with the Studer Group in 2015. The area had been experiencing an oil boom which left turnover at an all-time high and much inconsistency in patient satisfaction scores. The partnership with Studer Group was internally named the Passport to Success, and with commitment from all leaders across the organization, success is what is being achieved.
 
We have invested much time and effort implementing best practices including leadership development; routine rounding on employees, internal customers, physicians, and patients; employee recognition; behavior based interviewing and peer selection processes; high/solid/low performance conversations; AIDET communication techniques; and bedside shift report. A key element for consistency and lasting success is leaders being held accountable for measurable goals and behaviors through use of the Leader Evaluation Manager.
 
Through our Passport to Success, Sidney Health Center has seen improvements in all HCAHPS scores, moving the majority from the bottom quartile to the top quartile of the CMS database. We have made improvements in workforce with turnover being reduced by 50 percent. Externally, we’ve received national recognition as a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital multiple times, regional recognition with the Quality Achievement Award from Mountain Pacific Quality Health, and were just recently recognized by the Montana Hospital Association as the 2017 Innovation in Health Care Award recipient.
 
We are honored to be named as the Studer Group’s Healthcare Organization of the Month and would like to recognize each of our dedicated leaders for their commitment to our journey, as well as our Studer Coach who has been instrumental in our progress.
