Self Regional Healthcare is celebrating Studer Group's Healthcare Organization of the Month for February 2014 with a community-wide fireworks show in recognition of the hard work and success of our team members. We are honoring our team members, and also thanking their family members and the community for their support of Self Regional.

A 421-bed facility located in Greenwood, South Carolina, Self Regional serves more than 250,000 people in a seven-county region. Starting with a handpicked medical staff in 1951 to the evolution into a regional medical center, Self Regional's focus has always been on quality healthcare.

In November 2005, the CEO and COO, along with key members of the administrative team, launched a journey of service excellence. Through renewed commitment, shared goals, dedicated leadership, and employee involvement in service excellence teams, Self Regional Healthcare has seen many positive results including improved employee, physician, and patient satisfaction.

Self Regional Healthcare is proud to be at the forefront of service excellence. Quarterly off-site leadership educational sessions are held, all leaders participate in the LEM process with MMM. Employee forums are also conducted quarterly in an effort to improve communication throughout our 2,200 employee organization. The six pillars -- People, Service, Quality, Growth, Finance, and Community -- provide a foundation which aligns our goals, behaviors, and processes. Our pillar goals are communicated by Pillar Boards, which are located throughout our facilities.

People Pillar: To achieve high patient, physician, and employee satisfaction, Service Excellence teams were formed. These teams are comprised of staff, whose focus is to celebrate achievements, honor outstanding employees and physicians, and ensure patients receive very good care. Self Regional Healthcare measures employee satisfaction through the Gallup survey. This survey has continued to show significant improvements each year. Other steps to achieve high satisfaction include:

  • Rewards and recognition to include employees of the month and celebration socials for our "wins"
  • Physician of the quarter award
  • Communication boards strategically placed throughout our organization
  • Birthday and employment anniversary recognition
  • Employee established Standards of Behavior

Service Pillar: Patient satisfaction is measured by Press, Ganey Associates, Inc. Outpatient, inpatient areas like /Women's Center and emergency department scores continue to show improvement as service excellence teams develop initiatives aimed at enhancing the patient experience. Service improvements include:

  • Hourly Rounding®
  • Televisions in outpatient waiting rooms
  • Pre-procedure and Discharge phone calls
  • AIDET®
  • Wireless Internet access
  • Hardwired leader rounding

Quality Pillar: Self Regional Healthcare is engaged in quality improvements related to the intervention projects recommended by IHI- Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Quality initiatives include:

  • Implementation of Rapid Response Team
  • Central Line Bundle
  • Ventilator Bundle
  • Reduction of safety ratio
  • 2014 CareChex ratings in the top 10 percent in the nation for Medical Excellence in Coronary Bypass Surgery, Heart Attack Treatment Spinal Fusion, and Women's Health
  • 2014 CareChex ratings in the top 10 percent in the nation for Patient Safety in Neurological Care, Pulmonary Care, and Stroke Care
  • Minimal Lift Program implemented to clinical staff

Growth Pillar: Self Regional Healthcare has expanded access to care with Self Medical Group, its affiliated practice network with more than twenty practices including primary care, specialty care and hospital-based care. Self is also sponsoring Access Health Lakelands, a service that connects people in the community with the appropriate health care resource.

Financial Pillar: Self Regional Healthcare remains a sound financial organization performing above internal goals and benchmark standards, while at the same time, announcing a first in South Carolina with an overall 5% rate reduction for FY14.

Community Pillar: Self Regional is committed to the community, and has recently expanded its community presence and outreach with the Self Regional Health Express, a mobile health unit designed to deliver screening, health education, and health information to people throughout our service area. In addition, Self Regional's foundation recently announced the recipients of more than $400,000 of $1.4 million in community support.
