Kahuku Medical Center

Kahuku Medical Center (KMC) has always been a healthcare partner for the North Shore and Koolauloa community on the island of Oahu.  Transitioning from the former Kahuku Hospital (1928-2008), Kahuku Medical Center is now a 21 bed critical access hospital (CAH) facility (13 swing bed/8 skilled nursing) offering emergency, out-patient services and primary care.

KMC’s Emergency department is staffed with Board ER certified physicians and nurses 24/7. KMC is an affiliate of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), a statewide network of hospitals on Oahu and the neighbor islands.

In 2010, leadership at KMC acknowledged that various aspects of transition were necessary including work culture to help KMC be an active and effective healthcare provider for the future. Our affiliation with Studer was named, Kulia I Ka Nu`uStrive for Excellence - and at that time, we faced many challenges with corporate change and realignment of service with KMC’s mission, vision and organizational goals. Starting with the implementation of the Must Haves –we have made great strides with increasing communication and leadership , including hourly rounding, staff rounding AIDET, communication boards, employee recognition, employee selection, quarterly employee forums, employee newsletters; quarterly leadership development institute (LDI) retreats and a new leadership evaluation tool (LEM) has facilitated staff/leader educational growth. Our outreach efforts also extend to our service area with quarterly community newsletters, service projects and stakeholder participation in our upcoming strategic visioning/planning process.

KMC has had a landmark 2014 year, and we are especially proud of our electronic medical record(EMR) and our new CT scan unit, one of several capital improvement projects funded with the help of state capital improvement program. In early 2015, we will be offering a new primary care clinic on campus.

Some highlights over these past few years include:

  • Increased patient satisfaction from 86% to 92%
  • Increased response rate from 10% to 26%
  • Increased employee satisfaction by 43%
  • Increased Emergency Room utilization of 32%
  • Increased hand hygiene compliance from 65% to 100%
  • Increased total margin by 14%
