Columbus Regional Hospital Columbus, Indiana

Columbus Regional Hospital is a 225-bed regional hospital located in Columbus, Indiana, serving ten counties in southeastern Indiana. We are a not-for-profit, county-owned hospital delivering patient care through 35 medical specialties with 220 physicians on medical staff and 1,700 employees.

We structure our work around five strategic pillars: People, Service, Quality & Safety, Growth & Innovation, and Finance. We use this approach to balance all the complexities of the healthcare system with key areas that mean the most in patient outcomes.

We began our work with the Studer Group in 2004 to help identify best practices for service excellence. As a result, our patient satisfaction scores for 2005 were at an all-time high, recognizing the outstanding achievement by our employees, physicians, and volunteers to deliver the highest level of care and service. We had a strong year across all our five strategic pillars in 2005 and this included:

  • Scored in the top 95th percentile of 300 hospitals surveyed for employee satisfaction
  • Employee Turnover better than industry average and trending downward
  • Registered nurse turnover better than industry average and trending downward

  • Satisfaction scores at all-time high for 2005
  • Outpatient services at the 95th percentile ranking in 2005
  • Nine departments had double-digit increases in their percentile rankings in 2005
  • Less variation in service as best service practices are hardwired in 2005

Quality & Safety

  • At 98th percentile for overall ranking on CMS national quality measures
  • VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence in ventilator associated pneumonia and heart attack care
  • Second Indiana hospital designated JCAHO Primary Stroke Centers
  • Hospital Quality Improvement Award of Excellence from Health Care Excel, the Indiana Medicare Quality Improvement Organization, one of only three Indiana hospitals in Indiana to meet the award criteria in all four clinical topics measured for quality care (acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical infection prevention)

Growth & Innovation

  • Innovator in new technology – among the first five hospitals in the country with new lung cancer technology in 2005
  • Most Wired award winner in 2005, three straight years for the award
  • National finalist in 2005 for Foster G. McGaw for Excellence in Community Service; second time within three years

  • Exceeded 2005 goal for operating margin to end year at 5.1%
  • Days Cash on Hand indicator better than industry average

The mission of Columbus Regional Hospital is to improve the health and well being of the people we serve, and our dedicated employees and medical staff are making a difference in our journey to achieve excellence in everything we do.
