Message from our President
Build deep engagement now.
Healthcare is constantly changing and change isn’t always easy. As healthcare organizations continue to consolidate and align to new delivery models like population health, there is heightened pressure to perform. Yet, there is more to be gained than lost when leaders, providers, and patients work together to engage in new and innovative models of care. Among those impacting change, nurses are critical partners in steering the ship as stewards of patient safety and quality clinical care.
In this issue of Hardwired Results, our goal is to bring you leading practices on what’s working well to build and sustain high engagement that delivers on our promise to patients (and nurses). In our feature story, “Managing Change: 5 Ways to Build Engagement” on page 2, Studer Group coaches Lisa Reich, RN and Diana Topjian, RN bring their recommendations from decades of experience in successfully coaching and hardwiring engagement tactics that drive better outcomes in healthcare organizations.
Worried about industry challenges from retirements and turnover resulting in a nursing shortage? Check out the creative solutions offered by three CNOs on page 6 and learn how engagement is also driving better clinical quality and the patient experience at Appalachian Regional Health System on page 7. In “What Nurses Need and How to Provide It” on page 8, American Nurses Association President Pam Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN shares insights on needed skill sets for future nurse leaders and how organizations can create a better practice environment.
And finally, this issue wouldn’t be complete without the voices of staff nurses. See “Saving Lives” on page 9 to hear how nurses at Grady Health and Ochsner Baptist Medical Center are using post-visit phone calls and rounding to improve clinical outcomes, increase patient experience, reduce readmissions, and yes, save lives.
Yours in service,
Debbie Ritchie
