Message from our CEO and President
Communicate The Why
Beginning with “why”—before explaining “what” and “how”— is a powerful way to connect individuals in our organization back to the evidence for change as well as the personal values that drive each of us in healthcare. While we frequently remember to do this when rolling out new information or initiatives to staff, it’s just as important to connect back to “why” with leaders, providers, and Board members. (See “No Margin, No Mission: 7 Tips for Aligning Your Board of Directors.)
When it comes to communicating information on financials, consistently beginning with “why” can change the mindset of the entire organization to ensure strong financial stewardship. Need to improve operating margin or cut costs? Communicate the urgency of the external operating environment and explain how positive financials enable the organization to survive to fulfill its mission.
In this issue of Hardwired Results, we’d like to shine a spotlight on a financial challenge faced by many healthcare organizations today: organizational losses due to physician employment. Nathan Kaufman, one of the nation’s most respected physician integration experts shares his thoughts on how to “Stop the Red Ink.” Joseph Fifer, president of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, offers lessons learned.
What we find at Studer Group is just what these experts share: The key is to hardwire a culture of high performance through strong physician alignment and engagement. Through true partnership, we can save both our margin and our mission.
Yours in service,
BG Porter
