Your Best Nurses Week Ever
By: Rich Bluni, RN, Author of Inspired Nurse and Studer Group National Speaker
As far as I am concerned, every week is Nurses Week. I'm a nurse, as is my wife, her best friend, and my best friend. So on any given day, there are at least a half a dozen nurses in our house. But, Nurses Week is a big deal to us. We have a party. We have a Nurses Week bar-b-que. There are friends and food. Of course this is more than just another reason to fire up the grill. We love our work, and we love to celebrate what we love. But, just like any week, it can be just "another week," or you can choose to make it special for yourself, your peers, your friends, and your coworkers and team. Sometimes, I find, it is good to think outside the box. But, it is even better to throw the box away and really try something different. After all, if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten! Read on for a few ways you can make this your best Nurses Week ever.
Ideas for Celebrating
Over the years we've collected many ideas on how to celebrate nurses. Below are a few simple ideas you can use to start celebrating today.
- Give stationery to your team and ask them to send a thank you note or letter to your nursing mentors, best nursing instructor, and/or best manager and thank them for all they do and have done.
- Ask your team to write their best stories from their nursing journey. Put these together and make copies for everyone to have and share.
- Find a nursing home in your area that might have a retired nurse or two in residence. Bring them some gifts from your team and thank them for all they've done.
- Organize a luncheon for the most senior nurses and newest nurses in your organization and create questions and answers and look for ways to create mentoring relationships.
- Send a press release to your local paper highlighting nurses week and stories of the impact nurses have had.
- Host fun games such as a mock Olympics where departments/units compete against each other.
