MESSAGE FROM QUINT
ALIGN AND EXECUTE FOR OUTCOMES.
H ackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) in  Hackensack, NJ has an ambitious vision: to be the leading medical center in the nation by 2014.
But this isn’t just the vision of some senior leaders planning in a boardroom. It’s the daily focus of every employee when they come to work each day. It’s how physicians measure their leadership…and the experience of patients who receive care there.
By almost any measure, HUMC is already very good. In 2007, HealthGrades ranked it one of America’s 50 best hospitals for providing superior clinical outcomes; in 2006, Leapfrog named them among the top 50 hospitals for safety and quality; and HUMC has received the highest reimbursement of any hospital participating in the CMS Pay for Performance demonstration project for the last two consecutive years. As the first hospital in New Jersey to receive the coveted MAGNET designation for nursing, it has since been re-certified twice. The Joint Commission has certified HUMC for 13 disease-specific programs, the most in the nation.
How does HUMC do it? They align and execute for clear outcomes. HUMC starts with just nine annual organizational goals aligned under Studer Group’s five pillars. They cascade their patient-centered vision with active communication and training that inspires and informs employees. (Read what front-line employees say.) They are currently implementing an objective and weighted leader evaluation system to further align and focus leaders. (See how HUMC’s clinical quality and safety goals cascade.)
But this issue of Hardwired Results isn’t just about HUMC. It’s about what’s possible in any organization when we dream big, carry the vision, align the organization, and execute for outcomes. Even if your organization doesn’t have the resources that HUMC does, you can use the same tools to get similar results. Take a moment to read about Wright Medical Center, a small hospital in rural Iowa that is ranked in the top one percent of hospitals nationwide (Press Ganey). Then apply strategic planning tips from Studer Group Baldrige expert Debbie Cardello.
How will physicians, employees, and patients rank your organization in 2014? I hope you find this issue of Hardwired Results helpful in your journey.
