Use a Leadership Checklist

Every pilot who flies an airplane uses a pre-flight checklist to hardwire safety.
Here's a checklist you can use to hardwire leadership excellence at your organization.

Manage up self, co-workers, and individuals
 and physicians in other departments

Rounding for Outcomes (2 hours daily on
 employees, patients, internal customers)

Utilize rounding logs to follow up on issues
 and reward and recognition

 Reward and recognize staff
 (3:1 compliment ratio)

Make Pre- and Post-Discharge Phone Calls

Manage up one compliment to a senior

leader to feed the thank you note process

Publicly reward and recognize a high performer
  while rounding, during meetings, etc.

Re-recruit one high performer and coach one
 middle performer to higher performance

 Encourage employee bright ideas
 and innovation

 Update communication board

  • Post the weekly patient satisfaction
scores and the results to date for the
    Five Pillar goals
  • Post a cumulative graph of Five Pillar
    results to date for department

Solicit feedback from staff on how key
words are working and suggested service
  and operational improvements

 Hold monthly department meetings (cascade
 learning to all employees)

Meet monthly with supervisor and include
on the agenda:

  • Pillar results and action steps
