The findings are based on 47 in-depth interviews with senior leaders at seven organizations that have sustained service and operational excellence for three or more years. Facilities include:

> Clark Memorial Hospital, Jeffersonville, IN

> Delnor-Community Hospital, Geneva, IL

> Memorial Healthcare System, Hollywood, FL

> Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, Hamilton, NJ

> St. Alexis Medical Center, Hoffman Estates, IL

> Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, Sarasota, FL

> The Valley Hospital and Health System, Ridgewood, NJ

To qualify for inclusion as a high performing organization in this study by The Alliance for Health Care Research, each of the seven organizations met this selection criteria:

> Patient satisfaction is above the 85th percentile

> Quality indicators benchmark above 25% of outcomes

> Turnover is less than 12%

> Operating income is above 6%

> Growth is greater than 5%

> Has sustained results for a minimum of three years.

Their averaged results1 included:

> An increase of 35 percentile points overall in patient satisfaction

> An increase of 32 percentile points overall in employee satisfaction

> A reduction of 11.6% in overall employee turnover

> A current net operating margin of 6.9%

> Admissions growth of 11.7%

> Market share growth of 8%.


1 Results measure statistically significant progress organizations made on key indicators that measure service and operational excellence. The averaged results are based on the range of the high performing organizations studied. These results also range from a period of between four and six years, depending on when each hospital began working with Studer Group.
