Quint Studer Receives OSU Health Services Management and Policy Alumni Society Distinguished Service Award
When most people think of healthcare industry, they think of the passionate, caring and talented individuals who provide extraordinary patient care. But there's another group of people who are just as important: those men and women who determine how best to organize, finance and deliver that care.
Quint Studer, founder and CEO of coaching company Studer Group, has great respect for this "behind the scenes" group of administrators and policy makers. That's why he was so honored to receive the Distinguished Service Award from Ohio State University's Health Services Management and Policy (HSMP) Alumni Society.
"I am grateful to be recognized by this group of thought leaders," he said. "And I am also grateful for all the wonderful people in healthcare I work with every day. They are the ones who really deserve the honor."
Studer received the award on October 23 at the Management Institute and Banquet 2009.
The stated purpose of the award is as follows: To recognize individuals who have made unique and extraordinary contributions in health services management and policy through outstanding leadership in innovative approaches, discovery and dissemination of new knowledge, or leadership in organizations that are contributing to the improvement of health care services.
The award is presented periodically to a recognized leader in health services management and policy who has demonstrated interest in graduate education for health services management and policy. (While the HSMP Alumni Society has been in existence for 38 years, the award has been given only 16 times.)
Studer got his start teaching special education, then went on to hold leadership positions at Mercy Health System in WI. He later became COO of Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago, IL and President of Baptist Hospital, Inc. in Pensacola, FL.
He founded Studer Group in 2000. He spends much of his time harvesting and sharing best practices from his company's "national learning lab" of hundreds of healthcare organizations.
In 1999, inc. magazine named Studer its March Master of Business, making him the only healthcare leader to have ever won this award. In 2008, for the second time, he was listed as one of Modern Healthcare's 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.
Studer has written two best selling books. His first, BusinessWeek bestseller Hardwiring Excellence, is the best selling leadership book ever written for healthcare. More than 350,000 copies have been sold. His second book, Results That Last hit the Wall Street Journal's bestseller list of business books.
Perhaps best known for his philanthropic work and generosity to the Pensacola, Florida community, he has donated millions to programs that benefit children and the elderly.
Past winners of the Distinguished Service award include James M. Anderson, President and CEO, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; Charles S. Lauer, Publisher/Corporate Vice President; Modern Healthcare; Gail L. Warden, President & CEO, Henry Ford Health Care Corporation, Detroit, MI. (NOTE: See below for a complete list of Award Recipients.)
Quint was chosen to be recognized by our alumni because of the respect he has earned within the health administration profession," said Sharon Schweikhart, PhD, Associate Professor and MHA Program Director. "Quint's message of quality, service, and accountability rings true to the ideals of Ohio State's MHA graduates. We are so pleased to include Quint in this small—AND distinguished—group of winners of the HSMP Alumni Society Distinguished Service Award."
