Gulf Breeze, FL (November 2009)—Quint Studer has come a long way since his days as a student at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Illinois. But on Friday, November 6, his journey led him back to his blue and gold roots.
The founder and CEO of Gulf Breeze, Florida-based coaching company Studer Group® was inducted into the LTHS Hall of Fame at a ceremony held at LaGrange Country Club. He was one of five men and women selected from a pool of 65,000 alumni.
The Hall of Fame recognizes alumni and friends of the school who have excelled in the arts, athletics, business, education, public service, or other professions. Studer was selected for his outstanding work in healthcare.
"Quint Studer is evidence that no school, no matter how great its traditions, can fully predict the wonderful potential that awaits in the hearts and minds of its youngsters," said Terry Sullivan, president emeritus of Lyons Township High School faculty. "Quint overcame deafness and a resulting speech impediment to become an accomplished author and one of America's most inspiring public speakers. The impact of his message and the insightfulness of his ideas have changed healthcare around America."
Studer got his start teaching special education, then went on to hold leadership positions at Mercy Health System in WI. He later became COO of Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago, IL, and president of Baptist Hospital, Inc., in Pensacola, FL.
He founded Studer Group in 2000. He spends much of his time harvesting and sharing best practices from his company's "national learning lab" of hundreds of healthcare organizations.
In 1999, Inc. magazine named Studer its March Master of Business, making him the only healthcare leader to have ever won this award. In 2008, for the second time, he was listed as one of Modern Healthcare's 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.
Studer has written two bestselling books. His first, BusinessWeek bestseller Hardwiring Excellence,is the bestselling leadership book ever written for healthcare. More than 350,000 copies have been sold. His second book, Results That Last, hit the Wall Street Journal's bestseller list of business books.
Perhaps best known for his philanthropic work and generosity to the Pensacola community, he has donated millions to programs that benefit children and the elderly.
Four other people were inducted into the LTHS Hall of Fame along with Studer. Among them were Jennifer Christensen, a television producer who won the two highest awards in journalism for her work on "God's Warriors" (the most watched and most honored documentary in CNN history); and Mark Williams, the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics head coach who has led his teams to national and international success (he has trained two Olympic medal winners).
"I am grateful that I had the chance to go to a school that focused on the individual needs of each student," said Studer. "I was lucky enough to have many great teachers along the way who made a real difference in my life."
"Perhaps it was just one teacher, or one class, or one simple note of encouragement that ignited confidence in Quint," said Sullivan. "The result has been transformation for hospitals trying to honor their missions and employee groups wanting satisfaction and purpose.
"Quint Studer is evidence that literacy, positive thinking, and unselfish idealism can change lives," he continued. "He is a welcome addition to our Hall of Fame who humbles us all by his impact upon his industry."
