Karla Kirby: No Waiting
By Kara Olsen, for HealthLeaders News
Since Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Ind., exchanged its emergency department waiting room for 35 private rooms in July 2003, patients no longer sit alongside others who are ill and injured while they await treatment. Instead, a system of quick registration allows the staff to escort patients and family members directly in to their own room. No longer do patients feel as if they are competing with one an other for the attention of doctors and nurses. And, despite handling around 50,000 admissions per year, the staff agrees that the $5.6 million construction project has resulted in a more tranquil environment. Karla Kirby, RN, the administrative director of the emergency department at the flagship hospital of nonprofit Cardinal Health System, shares how the 400-bed hospital makes it's ER work with out the waiting room.
